Shandong Province ranks as the top region in China in terms of value added of the primary industry and value added of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery. In more detailed breakdowns, the province ranks second nationally in a detailed sectoral breakdown, Shandong ranks second in agricultural output, twelfth in forestry output, second in animal husbandry output, and fourth in fishery output. In crop farming, Shandong consistently ranks third in both grain cultivation area and output, with grain output exceeding 55 million tons for two consecutive years. Cotton planting area and output are both among the top five nationally, Both area and output declined for four consecutive years (2018–2021) before showing a modest rebound in 2022. The province ranks seventh in oil crop planting area and fourth in oil crop output, although recent years have seen a gradual decline in both metrics. Its vegetable cultivation area is consistently among the top five nationally, and its output, which grows in tandem with the expanding area, has long held the top position. In fruit production, Shandong’s orchard area ranks among the top ten, and fruit output consistently ranks top two, with annual production exceeding 30 million tons for the past two years. In animal husbandry, Shandong has led the nation in total meat production for three consecutive years (2020–2022). It has held the top position in poultry egg production for 12 consecutive years, though output declined in both 2021 and 2022. Milk production has increased for five consecutive years and ranks fourth nationally, with current output exceeding 3 million tons. As a major fisheries province, Shandong is rich in aquatic resources. It ranks second nationally in both total aquatic product output and marine product output, and tenth in freshwater product output. Marine products consistently account for over 80% of the total aquatic output, and thus trends in total output closely follow those of marine products. In 2022, Shandong's total aquatic product output (excluding distant-water fishing) reached 8.439 million tons, including 7.249 million tons of marine products and 1.19 million tons of freshwater products.
